Pitchers to Watch, 2011

5-27 Starts, 0 Relief Appearances, sub-1.15 WHIP (2010)
Daniel Hudson (White Sox/D-Backs) 14 Starts, 1.00 WHIP
Stephen Strasburg (Nationals) 12, 1.07
Travis Wood (Reds) 17, 1.08
Vincente Padilla (Dodgers) 16, 1.08
Jamie Moyer (Phillies) 19, 1.10

Hudson, 23, and Wood, 24, are clearly the pitchers to watch this year, with Strasburg and Moyer both recovering from Tommy John surgery.  Padilla is 33 and hasn't had an ERA under 4.00 since 2003.

Daniel Hudson was one of the best pitchers in the 2nd half (8-2, 2.07 ERA) after being traded to the D-Backs before the trade deadline.  Wood made his debut on July 1st and nearly tossed a perfect game in his 3rd start, and pitched solidly for the rest of the season.

  1. I took a look at Wood and Hudson's stats. Wood was underwhelming with just over six innings per starts and a 3.51 ERA on a contender. Hudson, though....

7-1 with a 1.69 ERA and a WHIP under 1 is damn good, not to mention a 7.9 SO/9 and better than seven innings per start. And the ERA+ of 251 is incredible, the stuff of Sandy Koufax or Christy Matthewson if sustained for a season. Just imagine if Hudson wasn't on a last place team.

    He's definitely someone to watch!
